Leasing (equipment finance)

Leasing is a form of financing in which a company uses equipment in return for a periodic rent, without owning it, usually with an option to purchase at the end of the contract. It turns an investment into an operating expense spread over time.

For equipment whose generations are renewed quickly, which is the case for robotic platforms, leasing addresses a specific risk: tying up capital in a machine that could be outdated within two years.

The calculation is made on the total cost of ownership over the commitment period, and not on the rent alone. Maintenance, operator training, wear parts and insurance are all part of it; the accounting and tax treatment of the contract depends on its form and should be checked with an accountant.
